The band is headed by guitarist and vocalist Larry Norfleet, and has been performing for several years in the central US. A number of their previous releases have found favor with bluegrass fans, including this year’s When Charlie Dreams, whose video was honored by the Telly Awards in June. Clayborn Studios, who filmed and edited the video, and Branded Bluegrass were named as Silver Award winners in the Non-Broadcast division of the General-Music category.

Larry and the guys have spent much of 2020 in the studio, completing their second album, which Valerie Smith of Bell Buckle Records says she was happy to snap up.

“It is a pleasure to have Branded Bluegrass on the Bell Buckle Records label. They add a new breath of fresh air in how they present their own style of bluegrass with energy and enthusiasm. They are the best to work with, and it’s always a joy to listen to their music.”

A single from this next album, Mama’s Kitchen Table, is now available. Written by Tim Morgan and Steve Dean, it tells of a humble wooden table that became the focus of family activity in a simple home, with precious memories associated with everyone gathered around stored in a whole family’s recollections.

Branded Bluegrass is a family affair, with Larry on guitar, supported by his brother, Jesse Norfleet, on banjo, his son, Tristen Norfleet, on mandolin, Michael Martin on bass. For the new single, Indiana’s own Michael Cleveland is on fiddle. Tony Wray provides vocal harmony.

Larry says that the whole group loved this song right away.

“From the first time we listened to the demo of Mama’s Kitchen Table, we knew this was a song that we wanted to record. It brought back so many memories from growing up. Memories of Sunday dinners with family, homework, and many late nights with board games and dominoes. Those times seem to be a thing of the past, and family time at the kitchen table just ain’t what it used to be. We hope this song touches others the way it did us and just maybe spark those memories up, so Mama’s Kitchen Table will be the family gathering place once more. Thanks for listening!”

Valerie Smith shot and edited the video, filmed at Greystone Farm near her home in Bell Buckle, TN.
Branded Bluegrasstag:www.brandedbluegrass.com,2005:Post/62537492020-03-10T13:05:00-04:002023-12-10T13:33:15-05:00When Charlie Dreams video from Branded Bluegrass Posted on March 10, 2020 By John Lawless
Back in January we premiered the current single from Branded Bluegrass, When Charlie Dreams.

It’s a true story about a true life cowboy, written by David Stewart and Brice Long.

Now the guys have a music video to go along with the track, which finds them performing the song, set against real cowpokes going about their work.

When Charlie Dreams is available now in iTunes, and to radio programmers at AirPlay Direct.

True to the central Indiana band’s name, the song carries a cowboy theme. When Charlie Dreams is a true story written by David Stewart and Brice Long about a real-life cowpoke, a rough-and-tumble steer wrangler and rodeo writer known to Stewart.

Guitarist and lead singer Larry Norfleet says that the song is a natural for the band.

“When Charlie Dreams is an emotion al tribute song, a true story of a man loved by his community and family. When it was brought to us by the songwriter, Davide Stewart, we knew we had to cut it. We hope you enjoy this journey with ‘Charlie.'”

Larry is joined by Tristen Norfleet on mandolin, Jesse Norfleet on banjo, and Mike Martin on bass. Guest vocalist on this track is Shawn Lane, with Michael Cleveland on fiddle.

Radio programmers can get When Charlie Dreams now at AirPlay Direct. It will be available on popular download and streaming services in about two weeks.
Branded Bluegrasstag:www.brandedbluegrass.com,2005:Post/62537562019-06-20T13:10:00-04:002023-12-24T01:03:59-05:00Salt River Bluegrass Festival is resurrected for 2019 and beyond Posted on June 20, 2019 By John Lawless
Last year was a sad one for fans of the long-running Salt River Bluegrass Festival in Midland, MI. The event was a dream fulfilled for promoter George Carr, who had run it on his property the past 40 years.

But shortly before the July festival in 2018, Carr was suddenly taken ill and he barely made it long enough to attend his last one. His wife Kris, who had assisted with the festival since it began, announced beforehand that it would be the last for everyone, as she couldn’t imagine continuing without him.

George was able to attend last July, but only lived a short time after. Many friends and bluegrass lovers in central Michigan came to say their goodbyes to the festival, and the man who had made it happen.

And it truly was George Carr who created the festival. He had loved bluegrass music, and longed to put on shows where he could hear, and play, the music he loved. So he bought a 40 acre tract near Oil City, cleared it, built a stage and a shower house, and before long folks were coming with tents and campers to enjoy the pickin’. The first festival was held there in 1978, at what the Carrs called Salt River Acres, and each July since there has been a festival featuring primarily Michigan bands.

Kris didn’t start reflecting on the possibility of continuing until early this year, but once the idea took hold, she was determined to keep it going in George’s honor. After all, she owned the property, so there was no cost to rent a facility, and many people had offered to help if she deduced to do so.

So plans are now set, and a 41st annual Salt River Bluegrass Festival is scheduled to run July 25-27, with camping available on site all week leading up to music on the weekend.

She told The Midland Times that it feels a bit odd getting ready for festival week without George.

“That’s going to be a big, big void to fill,” she said of a bluegrass festival without her husband. “George was the ambassador. He was out in the crowd, talking to people, greeting people, giving little gifts away. He loved it. I’m not sure I’m going to fill those big shoes, but I’m going to try.”

The main change from how things have always been done is that Kris has invited a couple of more progressive bluegrass bands to perform this year. George had been a stickler for only featuring traditional music at Salt River, and that will still remain the largest part of the entertainment offerings next month. Also new this year is a band scramble where pickers are invited to sign up, and then be randomly placed into groups who will have just a few hours to rehearse before going on stage together.

Many of the groups who have been regulars at Salt River will be back this year, like Charlie Lawson & Oak Hill and Bluegrass 101. Kim Robins & 40 Years Late and Branded Bluegrass are also on the bill.

Tickets are available online for the resurrected Salt River Bluegrass Festival.

Best wishes to Kris Carr running the festival. Long may she reign!
Branded Bluegrasstag:www.brandedbluegrass.com,2005:Post/50053022018-01-03T16:30:08-05:002023-12-24T01:03:04-05:002018 SPBGMA NOMINATIONS FOR #TEAMWPP
It's been a whirlwind week in the holler at #teamWPP headquarters with a bunch of exciting things happening all on the verge of a beautiful Christmas and New Year. It frankly left me speechless and in a great reflection of the gifts we have all been blessed with in this tremendous family of bluegrass music, friends, and family.

I could not be more proud of the bands and band members that have a legion of fans and peers that follow and respect their music and performances so much to write them in for nominations in their categories and I wish them, and all nominees, the best of luck.
Furthermore, I want to thank everyone that also wrote in my name and participated in the very surprising nomination for me as Promoter of the Year. I am still in shock and it was a very emotional moment for me to even process being on any list with the names in that category. These people that I hold such a great deal of respect for in the way they direct their events, run their businesses and care for their relationships with other people like me, or the artists that come play their hearts out for them. I am truly honored that you, my peers, my friends, my bluegrass family, would all consider me in this league of specialists in their field, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Best of luck to all of the nominees!!!

MOST WELCOME, was released in 2016 and has not only received escalated bluegrass radio airplay, a boost in their band following and bookings, but also a series of nine SPBGMA nominations that stemmed from it, for both the album and it’s participating members, including Gil.

Until just recently, Gil had been playing locally with a band close to home and filling in with Branded and some other bands as often as he could. Benson has now made the decision to join on as an official band member with Branded Bluegrass.

“I’ve been filling in on fiddle with Branded Bluegrass for nearly two years for gigs that Albert Swain couldn’t make. When Larry asked me to step in full time this past February at SPBGMA, I thought it was the right time to commit to their group. They’re (Larry, Jesse, Mike, Tristen) a fun group of fellas that bring a lot of energy and laughs every time we get together. I look forward to playing music with these guys each and every time out.” -Gil Benson

Branded Bluegrass couldn’t be happier than to have Gil on board with the band and looks forward to touring with him and recording their upcoming project.

When Larry Norfleet, lead singer and guitarist for the band answered the phone early on the morning of December 15th, that news was not what he expected to hear. Though he was looking forward to attending SPBGMA, performing some showcases, hanging out with his Wilson Pickins Promotions team, he never imagined he would have such a personal reason to attend the awards show. Well…he still didn’t…he had NINE.

Branded Bluegrass signed on with Wilson Pickins earlier this year, just in time for the release of the band’s second album, Most Welcome. Produced by Clay Hess, the record offers up a mixture of original songs from guitar player Larry Norfleet alongside bluegrass and country covers.

The album opens with one of Larry’s songs, the banjo-heavy Ramblin’ Boy Blues. A working man’s wish for a little more time to do things he enjoys, it’s a nice introduction to the band and their traditional-leaning sound. Also from Larry’s pen is Come Back Little Darlin’, a mid-tempo number that’s a nice stylistic homage to bluegrass standards. Larry sings lead here, as well, with an earnest pleading in his voice as he as hopes for reconciliation with the woman he loves. Another original, Judgment Day, is one of the album’s highlights, with its dark feel and stark arrangement punctuated by Jesse Norfleet’s dobro and traditional mandolin from Tristen Norfleet. It’s a Gospel song with a slightly different flavor than what you hear on most bluegrass albums, reminding listeners that we shouldn’t judge others based on their outward appearance.

Of the covers, one of the best is perhaps also one of the most unlikely. Country artist Clay Walker took If I Could Make a Living Out Of Loving You to number one in 1994; his version is fun nineties novelty country. Branded Bluegrass transforms it into a strong, upbeat bluegrass song with bouncy banjo from Derek Dillman. I would have never really picked this song as one that would transfer well to bluegrass, but it does, and is probably very enjoyable live. Also a bit unexpected is All I Have to Do is Dream, made famous by the Everly Brothers and written by Boudleaux Bryant. The vocals are soft and serene, reminiscent of the original, but they’re set to a more progressive sound than most of the rest of the album, thanks to Jesse’s banjo playing. It’s not 1-4-5 drive by any means, but it’s a neat updating of the song.

Many bluegrass fans will recognize Dream of Me, perhaps from Vern Gosdin’s 1980s recording, or Josh Williams’ more recent bluegrass version. Branded Bluegrass sticks pretty close to Williams’ arrangement, though they’ve sped it up just a bit. It’s a well-written love song with sincere lead vocals from Larry. Tristen provides lead on Vince Gill’s All Prayed Up, a solid traditional bluegrass Gospel cut. This is the only four-part harmony on the album, and the band members’ voices mix well, sounding especially strong on the a capella chorus at the end of the song. Guest Gil Benson gives the song a little extra sparkle with his fiddle.

With Most Welcome, listeners are given a taste of a group that seemingly has a strong respect for traditional bluegrass but isn’t afraid to mix it up a little when the feeling strikes them. Larry Norfleet (guitar and mandolin), Tristen Norfleet (mandolin, bass, guitar), Jesse Norfleet (dobro, banjo), Derek Dillman (banjo), and Mike Martin (bass) obviously enjoy what they do here, and fans of modern traditional grass most likely will, as well.

For more information on Branded Bluegrass, visit them online at www.brandedbluegrass.com.
With their second CD, the Kokomo, Ind., group Branded Bluegrass has put together a solid release of 12 cuts, which include four originals by guitarist and lead singer Larry Norfleet. Their sound is based in traditional bluegrass, but they demonstrate the ability to venture off into the progressive realm as well, as evidenced in part by “Mountain Song” (popularized by the Gibson Brothers) and Boudleaux Bryant’s “All I Have To Do Is Dream.” The band is clean and solid, if nt flashy instrumentally, with Larry Norfleet on guitar, Tristen Norfleet on mandolin, Jesse Norfleet on resonator guitar, Derek Dillman with some standout work on banjo, Mike Martin on bass, and guest Gil Benson on fiddle. Clay Hess, who earns all recording, producing, mixing and mastering credit, also contributes one track each on guitar and mandolin, as does Ray Cossin on fiddle.

Vocally, the group is tight and polished, with Larry and Tristen handling most of the leads. Among the highlights are a rousing “If I Could Make A Living Out Of Loving You,” Larry Norfleet’s haunting “Judgement Day,” Steve Earl’s “I Still Carry You Around,” and some very nice four part harmony on Vince Gill’s “All Prayed Up.” Also well done are Steve Jackson’s fatherly tribute “Most Welcome,” a strong version of “Lonesome Reuben ,” and “Dream Of Me,” a wistful take on coping with relationships while on the road.

This is a pleasant release, and the group shows potential beyond what is included here. While there is much good material here, a more uniformly strong choice of songs would improve their sound even further. Nicely done.
